French Toast – Traditional

Adapted from a Cook’s Illustrated Recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of Challah
  • 1.5 C milk
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 T brown sugar
  • 2 T butter
  • 1 T vanilla extract
  • 1/2 t cinnamon
  • 1/4 salt

Instructions:

  1. Its best if the Challah is a bit stale or dry. If you have fresh bread, dry it out in the oven. Bake slices in a 300 oven on a wire rack for 15 min (flipping half way through). Let cool.
  2. Combine the milk, eggs, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, cinnamon and salt.
  3. Soak each slice of bread until saturated but not so much that the bread is falling apart.
  4. Cook toast on a electric skillet, or non stick pan with a bit of butter. Adjust temperature such that it gets golden and warmed throughout but not burned.
  5. Serve with fresh fruit,  maple syrup, and or powdered sugar
